Congratulations! to
Mark Sokolovsky from Cleveland, Ohio as the winner of the 2012
Annual Mid-Ohio Open Checker Meet, and for his outstanding performance he was presented a handcrafted wooden
wallclock created for the occasion. Congratulations! to GM Richard Beckwith as 2nd Place, Kenny
Miller as 3rd Place, Joe Weaver as 4th Place, Crist Miller as 5th place, all
the others who participated. At 4:30 some of the early arriving players were already
registering, playing warm up games, and visiting with other players.
Crist was using
an auxiliary room adjacent to the store which served as our playing room. The room was set up with plenty of tables & chairs and
each table was also provided with
boards, checkers, and 3-Move cards. John Acker provided the game
recording sheets.
At our 5:00 PM pre-tournament meeting,
Crist Miller, director of the 2013 Annual Mid-Ohio Open Checker Meet warmly
welcomed 17 checker enthusiast from 5 different states. Larry Atwood from
Minot, North Dakota was recognized as the most distant player, driving 1,400
miles and over 25 hours one-way to attend the meet.
Crist Miller covered the playing rules, tournament schedule, and
discussed what amenities and lodging was available. Crist introduced the
players to each other, his brother John, and family. The next several upcoming checker
tournaments were also announced as: Indiana open Aug 23-24 in Shipshewana, NC
1-day Cedarock Aug 24, Ohio Open in Medina Sept 7-8, Virginia Open in Bedford
Sept 20-21, and District 9 in LasVegas in Sept 23-25. We appreciate Crist and Rosanna Miller for opening their home
and hosting our ty and providing our playing facility. They did an
exceptional job as planning, organizing, and sponsoring this checker meet.
Mrs. Miller kept us supplied in treats, snack, coffee, water, and drinks through the
tournament so players could relax and enjoy something as they took breaks between matches. Crist directed the tournament and maintained a wall scoreboard
with John Acker assisting with pairing and scorekeeping. Acker was set up in a
corner of the playing room (his office). He brought a laptop, forms, supplies,
books, extra everything, and, etc. (his Tournament Footlocker).
We appreciate John Acker using his laptop and ChessArbiter Pro
Draughts program to pair, accumulate match points and document the tournament
so the results could be post in a timely manner on the
USA Checkers-facebook,
and in addition to snapping some pictures.
There was a number of visitors who dropped by during the
tournament to watch and visit with players. You could hear the pleasant
“clip-clop”
traffic through the window, which brought back 65 years of my country
childhood. Rosanna out did herself in preparing Saturday's Lunch. The
food (delicious garden fresh sweet corn! & beef and potato casserole!) and the hospitality was way more
than expected. This was a most enjoyable weekend checker tournament with
wonderful fellowship, addictive top level checker competition right in the
heart of Amish country. You will have to attend next year's meet to know what
we are talking about! Before and After Ratings are the results of a player's rating
before this tournament and after it was recalculated from this score-sheet by
ACF rating processor. | icheckers ratings Neil Wenberg, Richard Beckwith, and John Acker had many checker
books for sale. John Acker had his newly authored 2013 US National “3-Move” booklet for sale at $12.00. It included pictures, games, players'
results, and other details about the recent tournament. Several of the player's wives attend the ty and they enjoyed browsing and shopping the
next door store
and the near by towns of Wooster, Orrville, and Dalton while their husbands played
checkers. The $20 entry fee covered all tournament and food expense, with left over
proceeds going to the Ohio Crippled Children's Fund. The Annual Mid-Ohio Checker Meet alternates back and forth between “GAYP” and “3-Move” every other year, so it will be “GAYP” in 2014.
The Annual Mid-Ohio Open Checker Meet decided to schedule their future tournaments on the third Friday & Saturday of
August, so next years dates are, August 15th & 16th, 2014. Crist has already call me about some additional features he
is planning to add to next year's Mid-Ohio that will make it even better. We appreciate the Amish Players: John Troyer, Joe Weaver, Harley Hochsteler,
and Aden Keim who played in the 2013 National in Cincinnati, 2012 Greensboro Open, 2012 Virginia, and 2012 District 4 in
Lexington, NC. Joe Weaver also played in the 2011 VA Open in beautiful Bedford, VA. Again, “A-Big-Thank-You” to Crist & Rosanna Miller for planning, organizing, & directing a Great Checker
Meet.
